That warm, luminous glow that makes skin look lit from within and turns ordinary backgrounds into something painterly and dreamlike has a name: golden hour. And on Bonaire, we are blessed with some of the most beautiful golden-hour light on Earth.
What Is Golden Hour?
Golden hour is the roughly 60-minute window after sunrise and before sunset when the sun sits low on the horizon. At this angle, sunlight scatters harsh blue wavelengths and lets warm reds, oranges, and ambers through. The result is soft, directional, warm light that flatters every skin tone.
Why It Is Different in the Caribbean
On Bonaire, golden hour is amplified by the clarity of the atmosphere and the proximity of the sea. The water reflects and diffuses light, adding a natural fill that softens shadows. The flat, open landscape means the low sun can paint the entire scene in the same warm tone simultaneously.
What It Does for Portraits
In direct midday sun, faces are lit from above, creating unflattering shadows. Golden-hour light comes from the side and slightly below, wrapping around facial features and creating a gentle, three-dimensional quality. Hair catches a luminous backlight. Skin tones glow.
How to Plan Around It
On Bonaire, sunset falls roughly between 6:15 PM and 6:45 PM year-round. I schedule portrait sessions to begin 60-90 minutes before sunset so we have the full golden window. Morning sessions offer the same light with the added bonus of empty locations and cooler temperatures.
The Practical Tip
Face your subjects toward the setting sun at a 45-degree angle, not directly into it. Let the light catch one side of their faces while the other falls into warm shadow. Simple, effective, and beautiful every time.
Book your portrait session and we will make sure the light is working for you.
