What to Wear for Your Family Portrait Session: The Complete Style Guide
One of the most common questions I hear from families before their session is: what should we wear? Here are the principles that make every family look their best.
Coordinate, Do Not Match
Identical outfits look stiff and dated. Choose a colour palette of two or three tones and let each family member express their personality within it. Soft blues, warm neutrals, dusty corals, and sage greens all photograph beautifully in Bonaire’s light.
Avoid Bright White and Black
In harsh Caribbean light, bright white blows out and pure black absorbs heat and contrast. Off-white, cream, ivory, and dark navy are far more flattering alternatives.
Choose Textures Over Patterns
Subtle texture such as linen, cotton weave, or light knit adds visual richness. Avoid busy patterns, logos, and large graphic prints.
Think About the Location
Cool blues and whites sing by the water. Warm terracotta, mustard, and cream glow in the desert landscape. I will advise on your specific location when you book.
Comfortable Is Everything
If your clothes are physically uncomfortable, your body language will show it. Children especially need to be able to run, sit on the ground, and move freely.
Footwear Matters
Flat sandals, bare feet, or clean sneakers in a neutral tone are ideal for beach and outdoor sessions.
Prepare the Night Before
Steam or iron anything that creases easily. Bring a light layer in case of wind.
